Getting the terrain together

Yesterday we had our first chance to give the laser cut terrain set from Wargames Tournaments a spin.
I am super pleased with it so far!  It looks great even raw out of the box, comes with a TON of pieces and collapses down completely for easy transport.
The plan is to do quite a bit of modification to it, but its a great place to start.  One thing we did find is that it lacls for full hard cover.  For a well balanced Necromunda board, you'll probably want to pepper is some more solid elements to  hide behind or you might find that it favors ranged weapons too much.

Kickin' off: Materials

As I got myself whipped up into a terrain building frenzy this break, I thought it was high time I put a lil blog up to keep track of my hobby projects.

Riding on the recent wave of excitement about Necromunda at the office, I decided to jump on some purpose build pieces so we can start things off right.
For those that played it way back in tue day (1995! holy damn), you might remember the gang territories table.  A list of flavorfully described environments within the Hive city,  it's a terrain master project waiting to happen.

Here's how I'm getting started:

Hit up the hardware and craftstore with an open mind.  There are so many dirt cheap options to use as building materials if you're willing to get creative.
The real winners here are the Device boxes (blue boxes).  It takes little effort to imagine what you could turn those babies into!
I also love Hardboard as the base for terrain pieces. Its light, but super durable and can be easily sawed and carved into shape.  Its generally sold as a pre-gesso'd board for painting, but you can get uncoated board for cheap.

Next up: Plastruct styrene plastic pieces. These are purpose made for hobby projects, so youre gonna pay a bit more, but these are the meat and potatoes of craft projects.
You can see some of the sheets here as well:

The grid sheets are something special.  Those are, in fact, plastic cross stitch 'canvas' but makes amazing mesh for all your sci-fi terrain needs.

And finally, let's not forget...lots and lots of bits!

Collecting Games-workshop stuff for years nets you a ton of spare bits, but you can also purchase specifically what you need from ebay, where there are lots of resellers that break out the bits and sell them (with a markup of course)

Alright, let's see what we can come up with!
